UU��ֱ�� hosted the event in collaboration with Radius Law and Flex Legal. </span></p></div><div><p paraid="704194981" paraeid="{a1653d3e-e180-455f-bc1b-4184128762d4}{27}"><strong>The origins of the O Shaped lawyer </strong></p></div><div><p paraid="1937290774" paraeid="{a1653d3e-e180-455f-bc1b-4184128762d4}{33}">Before becoming a General Counsel (GC), Kayne spent a year as a Commercial Programme Lead using legal services. Here, Kayne looked at the relationship between internal business colleagues, internal legal providers, and external law firms and noticed a disconnect between these different parts delivering services to the businesses and a lack of understanding of the different roles each part could play. The internal business did not recognise what the legal function was doing and why, and the internal and external legal functions also showed a lack of understanding of each other. This disconnect was where the heart of the O Shaped movement began. </p></div><div><p paraid="369914769" paraeid="{a1653d3e-e180-455f-bc1b-4184128762d4}{158}">Kayne then took the approach of building a team on a people-first basis, to understand the people better and then build the team around this, hiring for attitude and training for skill. Kayne considered why we have an industry focused on recognising excellence as technical skills and not as the broader and more rounded human business skills.  </p></div><div><p paraid="1494542653" paraeid="{a1653d3e-e180-455f-bc1b-4184128762d4}{218}"><strong>Creating a new generation of well-rounded in-house lawyers </strong></p></div><div><p paraid="1671672290" paraeid="{a1653d3e-e180-455f-bc1b-4184128762d4}{224}">Kayne started to look at what was being taught and the skills focused on in law schools. There is still a significant focus on driving technical excellence at the expense of other skills and potential capabilities.  </p></div><div><p paraid="39205164" paraeid="{a1653d3e-e180-455f-bc1b-4184128762d4}{254}">O Shaped considers law schools, law firms and in-house as a legal ecosystem that influences the legal curriculum. However, there has been little change in terms of the focus of the curriculum.
