In practice, the 2001 electronic conveyancing proposals1 were overtaken by the advent of the Land Registration Act 2002, which has put in place a framework that allows for further, more focused developments on an incremental basis of the kind that will be capable, ultimately, of supporting the creation of a full electronic conveyancing system. In particular, the Land Registration Act 2002 provides a framework for electronic documents, that effect dispositions and fulfil certain criteria, to be treated as in writing and duly signed or executed as a deed by the parties to it2.
