Investment platform services

Reform of the regulation of financial services has been fast and far-reaching within the UK and across the European Union (EU) and the infrastructure of the financial services system has been the subject of significant reforms. One example of reform is in relation to investment platform services provided by independent platform providers. An investment platform stands between the retail consumer and/or their financial adviser on one side, and the fund managers with whom the consumer may wish to invest on the other, forming a relationship with and offering valuable services to both sides. Investment platforms are playing an increasingly important role in investments made by retail consumers and the regulation of platforms, and how they are used by both retail consumers and financial advisers, is a hot topic.

FCA seeks views on AI ahead of January 2025 tech sprint

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is seeking input from stakeholders on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK financial services sector and the regulatory framework. The initiative is part of the AI Lab, which aims to promote growth and competitiveness in the sector. Responses are sought by 31 January 2025.The FCA is also hosting an AI Sprint on 29 and 30 January 2025, aiming to inform the FCA's regulatory approach to AI in financial services. The deadline for applications is 9 December 2024, and successful participants will be announced by the end of December 2024.

TPT publishes its final report on overview of its work and achievements

The Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT) has issued its final report outlining its work and achievements, highlighting global consistency in transition planning and its use in decision-making by financial institutions, corporations, governments and regulators. The TPT has established a framework for good practice transition plans, which has seen accelerating market and regulatory adoption. It says further efforts are needed to ensure widespread adoption of these plans.

PRA and FCA set out final policy on prudential assessment of acquisitions and increases in control

The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have published a joint policy statement (PS18/24) setting out final policy and providing feedback to responses received to consultation paper CP25/23, Supervisory statement—Prudential assessment of acquisitions and increases in control. The consultation set out proposals to replace the EU guidelines on the prudential assessment of acquisitions and increases of qualifying holdings in the financial sector. The PRA supervisory statement SS10/24 and the FCA guidance took effect on 1 November 2024.

FCA publishes Handbook Notice No 123

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has published Handbook Notice No 123, which includes changes to the FCA Handbook made by the FCA board on 29 and 31 October 2024.
