Health and social care levy definition

What does Health and social care levy mean?

The Health and Social Care Levy (HSCL) is a levy of 1.25% charged and collected in the same way as national insurance (NIC). In practical terms, it is similar to a rise in NIC rates because the items on which this levy applies and the administration of it will closely match NIC. It will be paid by employees, employers and the self-employed on their earnings. Generally, exemptions and reliefs applying to NIC also apply HSCL (including apprentices under 25, under 21s, employers of veterans and employers in Freeports, the employment allowance).
