Decree nisi definition

/dɪˌkriË Ëˆnʌɪsʌɪ/

What does Decree nisi mean?

The first (or preliminary) decree in divorce proceedings, specifying that unless sufficient cause or good reason is shown to the court why the divorce should not be made final, an application can be made for the decree absolute (the final decree).

This is the first (or preliminary) divorce decree – otherwise, the penultimate divorce order. Unless the other party to the divorce can satisfy the court that there is good reason why the divorce should not be made final an application can be made by the Petitioner following 6 weeks and 1 day from the date of the pronouncement of the decree nisi for the decree to be made absolute and for the marriage then to be brought to an end. The decree nisi is pronounced in open court and notice of the date and time when the decree will be pronounced is given to both parties to the divorce.
