31 December 2020 marked the end of the brexit implementation period following the UK’s decision to withdraw from the EU. At this point (referred to in UK law as ‘ip completion day’), key transitional arrangements came to an end, the body of EU-derived laws was preserved and converted into UK domestic law.

Assimilated law is the name given to retained EU law (REUL) which remains in force after the end of 2023. The re-categorisation of REUL (and associated terms) to assimilated law reflects a change in its status and treatment under UK law, in that it is generally to be interpreted according to ordinary domestic law and principles.

From 1 January 2024, REUL is ‘assimilated’ into domestic law by virtue of the fact it is generally stripped of EU-derived interpretive effects (eg supremacy of EU law, directly effective rights, and general principles previously retained under the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018). Lucy Ward first practiced as an insurance and reinsurance lawyer and subsequently concentrated on product liability litigation and product regulatory compliance. She is a senior lawyer in the Hogan Lovells Global Products team based in London.

She helped to set up the firms Science Unit recruiting its first scientists and promoting their role to clients.

She has particular expertise managing large litigation projects for a range of manufacturing clients including those facing litigation in multiple jurisdictions. Her clients include medical device manufacturers, tech and telecom companies, brewers and tobacco manufacturers.

Current work includes advising clients on pre-launch testing and compliance requirements across a range of global markets with a focus on accessibility and sustainability; working with technical experts involved in complex litigation and representing clients involved in Public Inquiries and other statutory investigations.
