The employer must pay sickness benefit for up to 33 days each year (or just 14 days where the employee is over 50) at the cost of the employer.

To qualify for sick leave and payment, all sick days must be certified by a Doctor by the issue of an electronic certificate (e-ZLA). The doctor submits this to ZUS. The employer may then retrieve the details of the certificate from the social security platform by logging in and enquiring on the employee's ZUS record.

Sickness benefits are paid based on a rolling 12 month year, so it is important to maintain a history of previous absences on the payroll
