11. Work permit assessment tool | Portugal

This tool is intended to be an easy reckoner for assessing the likelihood of requiring a work permit when sending an employee to Portugal. It does not consider other types of entry visas and it is not intended to be comprehensive. Please see section 9.4 for more on work permits and its links to further details. This is intended to be an initial analysis tool only.

Travelling to Portugal from inside the EU

Portugal is part of the EU and subject to the rules of the Schengen visa which applies to all countries in the Schengen area.

Additionally, all nationals from the broader EU/EEA EFTA states and Swiss nationals are entitled to live and work in Portugal without a work permit. However, local registration is required for those working and wishing to stay longer than 90 days in Portugal, as per point 9.9.
