Road to COP26 – IPCC publishes sixth assessment report on the science of climate change

What is the latest reported state of climate change, how does it compare to previous reports and what reaction have we seen so far to the IPCC's sixth assessment report on the science of climate change? 

In the latest instalment in our series of News Analysis preceding COP26, we look at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC’s) sixth assessment report on the science of climate change—‘AR6 Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis’. The report addresses the most up-to-date physical understanding of the climate system and climate change, bringing together the latest advances in climate science, and combining multiple lines of evidence from paleoclimate, observations, process understanding, and global and regional climate simulations. It is the first major review of the science of climate change since 2013, and its release comes less than three months before the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. It states unequivocally that ‘human influence has warmed the atmosphere, oceans and land’.
