Conversations on in-house legal and AI

AI has the potential to transform the way legal teams work — enhancing productivity, streamlining processes, and helping legal teams deliver even greater value to the wider business. But with this transformation comes critical responsibilities. How can legal teams harness AI effectively while ensuring responsible, ethical use? How can they build confidence in AI adoption and help shape policies that protect sensitive data, uphold compliance, and align with organisational values?

These questions sit at the heart of our video series, created in collaboration with Together, we spoke to legal leaders from forward-thinking companies, gathering insights that offer a practical roadmap for in-house legal teams looking to adopt AI confidently and responsibly.

So, what did we learn?

Legal teams as strategic AI advisors

In-house legal teams now have the opportunity to step into a more strategic advisory role — shaping how AI is used across the business. In our conversation with Temitayo Ogunade of GWI, we saw how legal can cross-collaborate with other teams to develop robust AI governance frameworks — establishing clear policies around data handling, compliance, and ethical usage.

Critically, Temitayo’s team isn’t just advising — they’re also adopting AI tools themselves. From generative AI tools to a custom-built legal chatbots, his team is improving efficiency, automating routine processes, and enhancing the accessibility of legal information across the business.

Key Insight: When legal teams actively use and experiment with AI tools, they’re better positioned to guide the business — not just on risk, but on value.

Start small, scale smart

AI adoption doesn’t have to begin with a sweeping transformation. In fact, starting with a focused, manageable project can be the most effective way to build confidence and demonstrate value.

Laura Dietschy from Palantir Technologies shared how her team leverages Retrieve-Augmented Generation (RAG) to enhance the relevance and accuracy of AI outputs — tailoring AI to their specific legal and business needs.

Her advice to fellow legal professionals? Start with a single process or task that’s repetitive but impactful. Demonstrate clear efficiency gains and use that success as the foundation for broader adoption.

Key Insight: Incremental progress is often the key to long-term success. Legal teams can unlock early value by identifying small, high-friction tasks where AI can make an immediate impact.

Balancing productivity and risk management

The potential for AI to improve day-to-day productivity in legal teams is significant — from automating document formatting to streamlining contract reviews and enhancing legal research.

However, as Alex Love from Algolia highlighted, this productivity boost must be underpinned by careful due diligence. Legal teams need to fully understand how vendors handle data, where information is stored, and what controls are in place to ensure data security and regulatory compliance.

Key Insight: Productivity gains are important, but they should never come at the expense of data security or ethical standards. In-house teams must thoroughly assess vendor policies to ensure alignment with internal and regulatory requirements.

Responsible AI on a Global Scale

For multinational organisations, embedding AI into legal processes comes with the added complexity of navigating different regulatory environments and cultural expectations.

Luis de Freitas from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) provided a blueprint for scaling responsible AI globally — from securing leadership buy-in to tailoring AI policies and tools to fit regional requirements. By fostering cross-functional collaboration across legal, compliance, technology, and operations teams, BCG is ensuring that AI is deployed ethically, consistently, and effectively across its global footprint.

Key Insight: Responsible AI isn’t just a policy — it’s a culture that spans geographies and functions. Legal teams have a pivotal role to play in fostering that culture through clear guidelines, proactive education, and ongoing governance.
