The institution of marriage in Israel is based on religion. The only recognized marriage that can take place within Israel is a religious marriage under the auspices of the Religious Courts. However, Israeli law does, to varying extents, recognize non-religious forms of marriage. This recognition has implications when it comes to divorce or dissolution of a relationship.
Civil partnerships in Israel
Israeli resident couples who have no official religious affiliation from birth or immigration (as recorded with the Israeli Population Registry) or opt out of having an official religious affiliation, cannot legally marry in Israel, though since 2010 such couples can register a 'civil partnership' with the Couples' Registry.
